Prayers of the People

April 7, 2013

We welcome Spring, the energetic season of hope and awakening. All life that has lain dormant in the loving arms of winter awakens and green shoots reach for the warmth of the sun and the cooling touch of spring rains. As we, the people of God, begin the Easter season with a feeling of renewal and hope let us offer ourselves in prayer. On hearing the words "God of hopeful awakening," please respond with "Hear our Prayers."

Trusting God, expand our consciousness, renew our spirit, and guide our thoughts throughout the day. Fill our hearts with your compassion, open our eyes to your presence in the world and enlarge our minds to understand your will. Take our hands and minister through them. Speak through our words and direct our feet in the path of peace. We know that you call each of us to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil. We know that each of us carries within our being, your vision of all creation healed and restored. We strive to be partners with you in caring for this creation and for the worldwide community of people. God of hopeful awakening...    "Hear our Prayers."

Compassionate God, we lift up our blessings and concerns for others. Grant to them health and wholeness, peace and joy, strength and hope. We remember before you all those named in our Prayer List. We pause at this time to pray, either silently or aloud, for all those whose names are on our hearts...    ...God of hopeful awakening...    "Hear our Prayers."

Peace-loving God, be a source of strength for our brothers and sisters at Nyanyadzi Methodist Church in Zimbabwe. May they always know that they are not alone in their struggles. We work and pray for justice and peace throughout the world and especially pray for a peaceful solution to the current north/south Korean crisis. Caring God, bless all who work for a peaceful world; peacemakers, peacekeepers and their families, and all those who willingly give of their time, their expertise and their lives to assist others in need. In our Kootenay Presbytery prayer cycle this week, we offer prayers for the General Council of the Church of Canada, its leaders and moderator, Gary Patterson. In the World Council of Churches Prayer Cycle, we offer prayers for the people of East Timor, Indonesia and Philippines. God of hopeful awakening...    "Hear our Prayers."

Hopeful God,
Guide our thoughts and our words.
Guide our work and our play.
Keep us present in the moment,
And open to your presence.
Help us to live fully today.

Keep us ever mindful of the words Jesus taught us. Let us pray together:

Our Father, who is in heaven,
Hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For Yours is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
