Prayers of the People

November 10, 2013

When you hear the words, "Our God, let us shine for you," please respond with "Hear our Prayers."

Creator God, as the days shorten and darken, as winter comes, we will be the lights to brighten the world. Let us praise you as much as when the summer shines upon us. Let us find signs and inspiration in the new vistas around us opened by bare trees. Let us think about the war sacrifices remembered this weekend and fill ourselves with the hopes for peace those young soldiers had for us many years ago. "At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them." Dark times and places are where you, O God, are there for us. You give us courage, comfort, inspiration and hope. This is the place where praise and poetry and great music arises, where real community manifests itself, the thinking place. Our God, let us shine for you...    "Hear our Prayers."

God of peace, we think this weekend through the World Council of Churches Prayer Cycle of the African countries of San Tome, Gabon and Principe, as well as the little Zimbabwe Methodist community we have continued to support with our prayers for many years. We pray for the families and victims of the typhoon in the Phillipines today, and hope the army of rescue agencies moves swiftly to support them. We pray for the peacekeepers and peacemakers throughout the world, and we are proud of the Mission and Service Arm of the United Church of Canada — it is a beacon of light and comfort wherever it goes. Our God, let us shine for you...    "Hear our Prayers."

In our own community we pray for Michelle Sylvest, Youth Advocate for Kootenay Presbytery. We think today of our congregational people and their loved ones in pain and sorrow, loss and loneliness, and we pray you find for them a way to give them what they need most right now. Let us help them where we can, let us be lightbringers to all those named in our Prayer List and others we name in silence or aloud...    ...Our God, let us shine for you...    "Hear our Prayers."

We promise to lighten up. We will use music and laughter and praise and whatever it takes to put a sparkle in whatever we do, following the Way of Jesus, embodying the Love of God. Our God, let us shine for you...    "Hear our Prayers."

Amen
