Prayers of the People: August 13

Let us join our hearts and minds as one in prayer. When you hear the words “God of hope and opportunity” please respond with “Hear our Prayers.”

Loving and omnipotent God, accept our prayers and visions of hope. Hear us and guide us as we envision a new and improved reality through restating our hopes and reimagining possibilities open to us. Help us to find resilience and patience as we reach deep within to practice radical optimism. Give us the courage to engage and persevere with the work that calls us. “God of hope and opportunity”…   “Hear our Prayers.”

Thoughtful and loving God, hear our prayers for the church universal; for this congregation, its mission and ministry; for our nation and its leaders. In our Kootenay Presbytery prayer cycle this week, we pray for all those who have served within Kootenay Presbytery and are now retired. In the World Council of Churches Prayer Cycle, we present our prayers for the people of Canada and the United States of America. God of hope and opportunity…   “Hear our Prayers.”

Merciful God, we lay before you our concerns for all those who are ill or in pain; those who grieve; those who feel lonely, dejected, forgotten; those who are oppressed and endangered.  We especially remember before you today all those named in our Prayer List. We pause at this time to name, either silently or aloud, all those for whom we feel concern…     …God of hope and opportunity”…   “Hear our Prayers.”

Eternal God fill us with hope for the future. We live in God’s world and God is in charge. God’s gifts of goodness and kindness, justice and mercy, reason and understanding are all around us. Let us appreciate them, enjoy them and share them. We remember all those striving to achieve peace thoughout the world; the peacemakers and the peacekeepers; bless them all and their families. Shine your light of love and faith on our brothers and sisters at Nyanyadzi Methodist Church in Zimbabwe. Accept our prayers of support for health care workers, teachers, engineers and the many who serve throughout the world in various organizations. We continue to pray for all those folks, along with animals domestic and wild, that are still being affected by dreadful wildfires and oppressive smoke. God of hope and opportunity”…   “Hear our Prayers.”

We end with prayerful and powerful words taken from a favorite hymn:

May the God of hope go with us every day,
Filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.
May the God of justice speed us on our way,
Bringing light and hope to every land and race.

And the people say…  “AMEN!
