For the Children
Sunday school resumes each Sunday except for the
Intergenerational Sunday

We have a Nursery Room available upstairs by the balcony,
a Quiet Play Centre at the front right-hand side of the sanctuary
and activity packages are available from the ushers.

Intergenerational Sunday
The first Sunday of each month is Communion Sunday
and is an Intergenerational Sunday,
so the children do not go to Sunday School.
Activity packages are available from the ushers.

We Are An Affirming Ministry
As an Affirming Ministry, we celebrate the diversity of God’s creation.
We celebrate the richness of our community when we
have diversity in age, gender identity,
racial/cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, ability,
and family configurations.
We seek to create a safe space
with an open invitation to bring every aspect of your whole self into
your participation in this ministry.

Thank You …
To singers who have joined the choir to prepare for Christmas musical offerings.
To the prayer shawl group for beautiful, faith-filled shawls.
To all who gave of their time and energy (and lots of laughs in the kitchen) to provide a fowl feast.  It was awesome!!
To Berdine Jonker, who attended the Board retreat this week, and provided much-appreciated expertise.

Mustard Seed Deadline
Please send your poems, pictures, events, and any other articles to Jody Dudley by Tuesday, November 20th

The UCW will be hosting the annual Christmas Bazaar on  Saturday, November 17th in the Church Hall.  High Tea will be offered from 1 pm till 3 pm, for just $5, with children under 6 years for free.  Come and buy something lovely from the baking, jewelry and craft tables, pick up a few mystery Christmas gifts, and check out the Fair Trade and Amnesty offerings. Be sure to come yourself, & bring a friend or two.

Wanna Buy a Pie?  …Last Chance
The Caritas group has resurrected the apple pie-making tradition, started many years ago.  We have a limited number of frozen pies available for sale at $12 each.  If you wish to purchase, please contact Leah Gray to arrange for pick-up.  Special thanks to all those dedicated Caritas women who spent several hours putting these delicious desserts together.

Thanks to Our Wonderful Congregation
You have prayerfully considered your weekly and monthly givings, and many have responded.  This is just a gentle reminder to please get those pledge forms handed in if you haven’t done so already.  On Sunday, November 25th after worship, we will meet over a finger food pot-luck lunch to celebrate and give thanks for this generous support for our Nelson United ministry.  The “Called to be Giving” team hopes that you will all join us in this blessed celebration.

Come Sing With Us
Chancel Choir rehearses Thursday nights in the Sanctuary at 7:00 pm beginning Thursday, September 20th.  All are welcome to come sing with us!

Youth Group
We are happy to be starting our Youth Group back up again, with a few changes: We will now meet on SUNDAYS 6:30-8:30 pm, on  Nov. 18, Dec. 2 & Dec. 16.  Also changing – we will start and end our meetings upstairs in the Fairview Room, so please use the parking lot entrance.  All Youth in Grades 6-12 are welcome to join for games, snacks, friendship and meaningful conversation. More info: email Robin or www.facebook.com/NUCYouth/ or talk to Robin.

Piano Donors Recognition…
The Admin Team has had a request that we post and acknowledge the congregational members that donated to the Grand Piano fundraising effort.  Keeping in mind that it would be too expensive to do a bronze casting of all the names (there are many), how shall we do this?  We’d love to hear from you if you have an idea for a special “Piano Donations” display.  Please pass your good idea on to any one of the Admin Team members (Lois Berg, David Boyd, Leah Gray or Elaine Henderson).

Windows Memorial Plaques
In memory of Elaine Balahura, Lesley Joan Kennedy and Lorne Owen Kennedy (Donna Strongman’s sister and brother), we have added their names to the Windows Memorial Plaque. If you would like to add a name in memory to the Windows Memorial Plaque please speak to Donna or Lois in the office.

Volunteers Needed to Help New Families
The Kootenay Parents Circle of Support is seeking volunteers (mothers, grandmothers and people who have experience with infants) to support  families during the first year of their baby’s life. Please contact the program coordinator through Apple Tree Maternity 250-354-3884 before Nov. 21, 2018

Recorder Ensemble
Spirit Winds Recorder Ensemble is starting rehearsals for a new session, so now is the time to join! Talk to Robin Murray.

Book Study Group
The mid-morning Book Study group will start again mid-September. Our focus will be The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu and will be 7 one hour sessions on Wed. mornings at 10 am at NUC. If you would like to join us please leave your name at the church office or contact Doug Scott for more information as we must order the books fairly soon. We are open to providing transportation to the sessions if that is a consideration. Our goal: fellowship and fostering community within the broader church community.

NUC Account at Bottle Depot
We have an account set up at the Nelson Leafs Bottle Depot and Recycling Centre.  A reminder that before they start counting your bottles and cans, let them know they’re for Nelson United Church or they’ll give you cash if you don’t.  Every little bit helps – thanks everyone!

Looking for Ushers
We are looking for someone to join the Ushering Team. Would you be able to spend a bit of time before the service, once every 5 months or so, welcoming folks and giving out bulletins? Please let me, or Lois in the office, know if you would like to volunteer in this way. Thanks – Donna Strongman

Chair Yoga with Instructor, Clement
Chair Yoga will be at 8:30 am on Mondays and Thursdays at the Seniors’ Centre on Vernon Street.

Men’s Game Time
Every second and fourth Friday of the month Joe Woodward and other Men will gather at 1:00 pm in the Fairview Room to play any variety of games like UNO, Cribbage, Crokinole. Come and join us

Important Reminder Regarding our Prayer List
Whenever adding a person’s name to our prayer list, please be respectful of that person’s privacy and Check with them or their family to make sure they want to be on the prayer list. Do not share their personal health information unless they say it is ok to share it. Please contact the office to ensure all details are correct and the name is added to the bulletin. Affirm United’s Newsletter: Consensus… Click to read
Nelson United Church is one of 200 Affirming Ministries in the United Church of Canada. In the coming weeks, our worship bulletin will contain terms and definitions to help us stay up-to-date with the constantly changing gender and sexuality language.

Caring Casseroles
Do you know someone (or yourself) who would be helped by having a pre-made meal? There are a variety (vegetarian, gluten-free, and meat) of casseroles in the freezer in our kitchen. Please let Donna Strongman know and it could be delivered, or take it yourself.

Prayer Shawl Group
Over 200 hand knitted or crocheted prayer shawls have been lovingly created by members of the Prayer Shawl Group. The shawls have been received by those appreciating a ‘warm hug filled with God’s love’.
