For the Children
Sunday school is taking a rest for the summer.
Children are always welcome and encouraged to come to church on Sunday.
We have a Nursery Room available upstairs by the balcony,
a Quiet Play Centre at the front right-hand side of the sanctuary
and activity packages are available from the ushers.

Intergenerational Sunday
The first Sunday of each month is Communion Sunday
and is an Intergenerational Sunday,
so the children do not go to Sunday School.
Activity packages are available from the ushers.

We Are An Affirming Ministry
As an Affirming Ministry, we celebrate the diversity of God’s creation.
We celebrate the richness of our community when we
have diversity in age, gender identity,
racial/cultural backgrounds, sexual orientation, ability,
and family configurations.
We seek to create a safe space
with an open invitation to bring every aspect of your whole self into
your participation in this ministry.

Kootenay Pride Parade
Sunday, September 2nd
Departs from Central School at 3 pm

Pride Parade Today
As we have for years, NUC contingent will be walking in the Pride Parade this afternoon. We are an affirming congregation and show our support of the LGBTQ community by participating in this event. Please join us! We are gathering at Central School before 3 pm. Dress for the occasion — lots of colour!

Affirm Ministry
As an Affirm congregation, we willingly struggle to learn new terms and definitions so that we can broaden our understanding of gender and sexuality.

Non-binary: an umbrella term used by those who do not identify as a man or a woman. Non-binary genders can be understood in a variety of ways. For some, their gender may feel like a combination of man and woman. Others have a sense of their gender being beyond the categories of man and woman entirely. Still, others may feel as though they do not identify with any gender at all.
Non-binary may also refer to gender identities that are specific to a culture that recognizes more than two genders.

Rise for Climate Change Global Day of Action

We’ll meet at the Railway Station at 11:30 am., musical instruments, and hand puppets are welcome. We will parade to the Cottonwood Market with some giant puppets made by local artists. From 12:10 to 12:40 pm there will be a program of speeches and music on the market stage.

Welcome Back Bbq Hot Dog Lunch!
Let’s celebrate the beginning of the Season of Creation and the first Sunday School session of the fall. After worship next Sunday, September 9th, Caritas will host a hot-dog/salad/ice-cream lunch to kick off fall events at Nelson United. To help offset costs please consider making a donation at the door.

Make it a Date!
Tea with the seniors at Jubilee Manor and Mountain Lake last year in September was well-received, so we’re going to do it again this year.  You are invited to attend either one or both of the worship services on September 11th, and stay for tea following the short service.  Worship will be at 10 am at Jubilee Manor, followed by tea and goodies.  Worship will be at 2 pm at Mountain Lake followed by tea and goodies.

Build Our Congregation Proposal & Meeting
A Board member will be available in the Church Hall after worship to discuss the many aspects of the Build Our Congregation Proposal.  Please attend a short meeting following worship on September 16th, when a decision will be made.

Piano Donors Recognition…
The Admin Team has had a request that we post and acknowledge the congregational members that donated to the Grand Piano fundraising effort.  Keeping in mind that it would be too expensive to do a bronze casting of all the names (there are many), how shall we do this?  We’d love to hear from you if you have an idea for a special “Piano Donations” display.  Please pass your good idea on to any one of the Admin Team members (Lois Berg, David Boyd, Leah Gray or Elaine Henderson).

Recorder Ensemble
Spirit Winds Recorder Ensemble is starting rehearsals for a new session, so now is the time to join! Talk to Robin Murray.

Book Study Group
The mid-morning Book Study group will start again mid-September. Our focus will be The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu and will be 7 one hour sessions on Wed. mornings at 10 am at NUC. If you would like to join us please leave your name at the church office or contact Doug Scott for more information as we must order the books fairly soon. We are open to providing transportation to the sessions if that is a consideration. Our goal: fellowship and fostering community within the broader church community.

Looking for Ushers
We are looking for someone to join the Ushering Team. Would you be able to spend a bit of time before the service, once every 5 months or so, welcoming folks and giving out bulletins? Please let me, or Lois in the office, know if you would like to volunteer in this way. Thanks – Donna Strongman

Chair Yoga with Instructor, Clement
Chair Yoga will be at 8:30 am on Mondays and Thursdays at the Seniors’ Centre on Vernon Street.

Men’s Game Time
Every second and fourth Friday of the month Joe Woodward and other Men will gather at 1:00 pm in the Fairview Room to play any variety of games like UNO, Cribbage, Crokinole. Come and join us

Affirm United’s Newsletter: Consensus… Click to read
Nelson United Church is one of 200 Affirming Ministries in the United Church of Canada. In the coming weeks, our worship bulletin will contain terms and definitions to help us stay up-to-date with the constantly changing gender and sexuality language.

Language has power and is constantly changing. We at Nelson United are doing our best to learn new words!

gender presentation/expression: how a person chooses to express their gender to others (through clothing, behaviour, etc.)
cisgender: a term that describes individuals whose gender identity is the same as the gender they were assigned at birth.

Caring Casseroles
Do you know someone (or yourself) who would be helped by having a pre-made meal? There are a variety (vegetarian, gluten-free, and meat) of casseroles in the freezer in our kitchen. Please let Donna Strongman know and it could be delivered, or take it yourself.

Prayer Shawl Group
Over 200 hand knitted or crocheted prayer shawls have been lovingly created by members of the Prayer Shawl Group. The shawls have been received by those appreciating a ‘warm hug filled with God’s love’. Anyone wishing to knit or crochet prayer shawls (beginners welcome!) are invited to join us in the Trinity Lounge the first Monday of each month at 1:30 pm.
