Prayers of the People: August 20

The anxieties of the world beset us all, the fire season, the insanity of world politics, the senseless deaths in places like Barcelona – we are all rocked daily by bulletins.   Let us all breathe deep for a few minutes and clear our minds to soak in the sunshine and feel gratitude for the good and beauty in the world. Let us approach our creator God with steady souls to proactively pray for our communities and our people.

So join me in the prayers of the people and when you hear the words “Your peace and love be with them”, please answer with “hear our prayers”.

God of all communities and nations: In the Kootenay Presbytery Prayer Roster we think of those who are licensed Lay Worship Leaders and others who lead worship in the congregations within Kootenay Presbytery. In the World Council of Churches Prayer Cycle we consider nations on the other side of the world:  Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia. We remember our brothers & sisters at Nyanyadzi Methodist Church, and the Peacemakers and peacekeepers, health care workers, teachers, engineers who serve throughout the world.  Your peace and love be with them…     “hear our prayers”.

God who hovers over our own people in sorrow, illness, despair and recovery, shine on them in dark hours and let them feel your presence: in naming them, we bring name all those on our Prayer List to know they are part of our caring church community, and we name others in need of prayer silently or aloud, bringing them here to be with us…     …Your peace and love be with them…     “hear our prayers”.

God who changes us and gives us strength: we pray for ourselves to have courage, humour and generosity; we pray for our days to be lived fully and thoughtfully, to live the way of Jesus, embodying your love.Your peace and love be with them…     “hear our prayers”.

And the people say…    “Amen!
