Prayers of the People: June 23

Published on Jun 25th, 2019 by Member of Congregation | 0

The prayers of the people this morning are responsive and we will borrow the phrase “called by earth and sky” from the beautiful hymn with the same name  (“Called By Earth and Sky,” More Voices, 135). When I pray “called by earth and sky”  you are invited to respond, “We seek communion with you, Living God.”

Called by earth and sky…   “we seek communion with you, Living God.”

Breathing in and out
feeling our shoulders relax
and spine unfurl
the pew supporting our backs
and the ground underneath our feet
we settle into our bodies
and open in prayer.
As parched earth longs
to soften and exhale
in summer rain
so do we long to drink in You,
Spirit of Life.
Shower down on us
until prayer  rises like petrichor
from our dusty hearts.

Called by earth and sky…   “we seek communion with you, Living God.”

As an earth community, we are living in a season of feverish intensity and accelerating change. Global systems of trade, weather, migration and international power are in upheaval, species on the brink of collapse, people uprooted and exposed. In you, Holy One,  we feel deeply into the ground of our being searching for interconnected roots that can support a living system offering cool shade, water and well-being to all. Called by earth and sky…   “we seek communion with you, Living God.”

Bless our growth as faith communities in the Pacific Mountain Region. May our sensitivity to the web of life in which we are embedded increase and may we live into new maps of the heart and mind as we learn how to be guests in sacred space hosted by others.

In the Pacific Mountain Region Prayer Cycle, we pray for Willingdon Heights Community Church in Burnaby B.C and the flourishing of its intercultural ministry. And on the World Council of Churches Prayer Cycle, we pray for Kenya and Tanzania

Called by earth and sky…   “we seek communion with you, Living God.”

We share each other’s pain and joy. In our prayers this morning we lift up these names of those in our Prayer List, and our Bienestar partners involved in the Nelson United Church outreach project in Guatemala, our brothers & sisters at Nyanyadzi Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, peacemakers and peacekeepers, health care workers, teachers, engineers and the many who serve throughout the world through many organizations; LGBTQ+ people who are persecuted in many countries and those we name now silently or out loud…    …May all those we pray for know your love and solidarity through us.

Called by earth and sky…   “we seek communion with you, Living God.”

Amen.
