Prayers of the People: November 4

When you hear the words, “Spirit of light and dark, shine through us“, please answer with, “Hear our Prayers.

God of all creation, to whom light and dark are the same, the long hours of June’s magnificent light have been replaced by November’s clouds and dimness, as the miraculous, steady and unceasing movement of your Earth brings us by mid-December to one-half of the daylight we had five brief months ago.  Some of us wish to go the way of the bear and tree, back to sleep; something, “wake me up when it’s over” and the sun is high again.

Spirit of all, keep us awake and aware, so that despite the change to winter we will keep going, motivated and enlivened by what we feel called to do daily in our part of the worldSpirit of light and dark, shine through us…     hear our prayers.”

We pray with thanksgiving for our Kootenay Presbytery Administration, Finance & Stewardship Ministry Team members Jody Dudley, Gordon and Cheryl Swedburg, Joan Hanson, and Ray Lundquist. We pray for these countries in the Pacific Ocean area, named this week by the World Council of Churches—American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kanaky, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga,Tuvalu, Vanuatu. We pray for the Nelson United Church–Guatemala Bienestar partnership.  May Bienestar increasingly succeed in their efforts to further health, women’s development, education and economic self-sufficiency in the communities they serve. We pray for safety and strength for our brothers & sisters at Nyanyadzi Methodist Church in Zimbabwe.  We remember all those who with hard work, serve around the world as healthcare workers, teachers, engineers, peacemakers, peacekeepers and more. Spirit of light and dark, shine through us…     hear our prayers.” And for those in our midst, we pray for healing, strength and soul-peace for all those named on our Prayer List. Let us now say, silently or out loud, the names of those in our hearts…       Spirit of light and dark, shine through us…     hear our prayers.”

Caring God, save us from our fears and anxieties as some of us endure the long nights, more bad news, and a fall in our confidence and motivation. May we be strengthened and encouraged, so we can push back against the wrong in the world and our society, and in the process, renew our minds. We remember that song which tells us,

When the winds of strife are blowing
when the tide of hate is rising, when the storms of life are raging
it is possible, even likely, that the music over our heads and in the air
is indeed God, not just somewhere, but here, with each one of us.”

God, tear back the curtains, come in and shine.  Spirit of light and dark, shine through us…     hear our prayers.”

Light of the world, shine on us. Love is the answer,

Amen!
