NUC Scholarships

Nelson United Church Scholarships

In the Spring of each year 
scholarships sponsored by Nelson United Church 
are available for those seeking financial support to continue their studies.

Women’s Scholarship

This scholarship has been established for women of the Nelson area to attend post secondary institutions, encouraging their participation in United Church ministry. 
Through the work of Reverend Elizabeth Evans, the scholarship campaign began in 1997, receiving many generous donations. The first two beneficiaries received awards in 2001.

Requirements:
Applicants must be female and secondary school graduates.
Preference will be given to members or adherents of Nelson United Church. 
Preference is also given to women intending to enter Christian ministry in one of its many forms; some examples may be:  order of ministry, Christian education, music, counseling, medicine or teaching.

Women intending to enter other programs may be considered.

Guilford Brett Music Scholarship

The scholarship was established by Guilford Brett in 1987 by the creation of an endownment fund in the memory of Amy Ferguson and the St. Paul’s United Church Boy’s Choir of Nelson. Because of her work with the Boy’s Choir, the scholarship is a recognition of the positive influence that Amy Ferguson had on many young people of Nelson.

Requirements:
1) According to the terms that Guilford Brett established, males are given preference for the award, although females are not excluded.
2) Students of music must be between the ages of 12 and 17 in the year of their application and must be resident in Nelson or the surrounding district.

James Hamilton Allen Scholarship

Please apply by writing a detailed letter of application and return to the Church office.

James Hamilton Allen was an elder at Trinity United Church (now Nelson United Church) for many years (as well as being a professional photographer). The scholarship was created in 1953 and was designed to be a scholarship for a male student with preference given to a lad going into UCC ministry.  It is to be given to a graduate of LV Rogers Secondary School. Because it stipulates LVR grads as recipients,  LVR “administers” the giving of the scholarship, however, the minister of Nelson United Church selects the recipient of this scholarship.

Requirements:
1) According to the terms of this scholarship the applicant must be a male graduate of LVR, with preference given to those intending to enter ministry in the UCC (1st), students entering ministry in another Protestant denomination (2nd), and other studies (3rd).
