Prayers of the People: April 5, 2020

Let us join our hearts and minds as one in prayer. When you hear the words “God of Hope and Faith,” please respond with “Hear our Prayers.”

This Palm Sunday we pray and remember and shout: Hosanna in the highest; Blessed to our God.  We are reminded that just as Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem humbly, on a donkey, God has entered our lives.  The world is in a time of need, and we pray humbly to our God for salvation for all of life’s creation.  Jesus taught us about the path of love.  Let us all lovingly embrace and care for all those, including ourselves, that require a source of comfort, hope and joy.  “God of Hope and Faith…   “Hear our Prayers.”

Caring God, hear our prayer for all nations and all people of the Earth. Hear our prayers of support for health care workers, teachers, engineers and the many who serve in various organizations throughout the world.  We especially appreciate our local health care personnel, all those keeping our food markets open, and maintenance workers in all fields.  We feel deep compassion and love for all those affected by COVID-19, whether in body, mind or spirit. Hear our cry for justice and peace as we remember our brothers and sisters at Nyanyadzi Methodist Church in Zimbabwe. We pray for LGBTQ2SIA+ people who are persecuted in too many countries.
Hear our prayers for our Bienestar partners involved in the NUC outreach project in Guatemala and for peacekeepers, peacemakers and their families serving in times and areas of conflict.
We pray for the future of our world.  May we always protect and respect this special gift of creation.
We pray for each other and our mission in the world.  On this Palm Sunday we pray for Northwood pastoral charge in Surrey.
In the World Council of Churches Prayer Cycle, we present our prayers for the people of Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.  We pray for better relationships among the different ethnic groups and traditions in those countries. We applaud their desire to achieve respect for all their citizens, especially regarding the rights of children, women, the young and the elderly, so that they may receive adequate education, jobs and health care. God of Hope and Faith…   “Hear our Prayers”.

Loving God, we pray for all those who are distressed in mind or body.  We feel compassion for those who are discouraged or alone, those who are desolate or depressed; those who struggle with pain, the challenge of serious illness, or the loss of a loved one. May they be filled with faith and with strength.   In our prayers today we name all those on our Prayer List. We pause at this time to name, either silently or aloud, all those for whom we feel concern …     …God of Hope and Faith…   “Hear our Prayers”.

We close with a prayer of hope and faith, written by Jim Harbell.

God who is with us now and always,
Support us and Guide us,
In this time of Uncertainty,

To offer Kindness to others,
In the Spirit that these safe interactions
Are the true dwelling of the holy.

In God’s name we pray,
