The Helen Catley Youth Fund is an endowment fund comprised of funds by the originating donor, Helen Catley, a Nelson United Church member whose life reflected commitment and dedication to youth, together with funds donated by members of Nelson United Church who share Helen Catley’s interest in youth.
The purpose of the fund shall be to create a platform for youth action at Nelson United Church that will involve youth in the wider Nelson community. Programmatic activities will be determined by the principle participants in the fund; viz., the youth themselves, together with a Nelson United Church representative. These activities will be deemed appropriate to, reflective of, and expressive of the purpose of Nelson United Church, “To Dare to Live the Way of Jesus, embodying the Love of God” and in line with its mission.
On Sunday, June 15 we welcomed Margaret Catley-Carlson to our service and celebration of the creation of the Helen Catley Legacy Fund. In accordance with Margaret’s wishes, the donated fund of $40,000 will support youth programming and youth outreach.
Helen was a long time resident of Nelson, a teacher and a member of Nelson United Church. Many will remember her feisty nature and strength of character. For me, I will remember Helen’s support as my very first practicum teacher at South Nelson School in 1967. She helped me believe that a teaching career was what I was meant to do. For her guidance, wisdom and certainty, I am grateful.
It is an honour to have Margaret here to present the legacy. She is a respected, Canadian public servant with many accomplishments. In 2002, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of her distinguished service career and received many honorary degrees from Canadian universities. In 2012, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. At an International level, her achievements include the following positions: President of CIDA, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nation’s Children’s Fund, Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare, President of the Population Council and Chair of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council. Reader’s Digest reported, “Catley-Carlson’s passion for protecting water supplies around the world is a culmination of 40 years of working for global good. She now sits on the boards of dozens of Science and policy agencies, including the UN Secretary General Task Force on Water.”
We celebrate the start of our Legacy campaign, to remember Helen Catley and to visit with her daughter, Margaret.
A “Big Thank You” for this generous gift to Nelson United Church.
